WON’T START OR STAY RUNNING

Won’t Start or Stay Running Basic Troubleshooting

Remove Shipping Braces

If the equipment is newly installed, verify that all shipping braces have been removed. If startup was attempted with the shipping braces installed, check the shaft timing.

Inspect for Mechanical Interferences

Verify there are no mechanical interferences restricting the movement of the pan or balancer.

Verify Absence of Soft Starters

Check whether a motor soft starter is installed. Soft starters are not recommended for vibratory equipment.

Check Voltage Across All Phases

Verify voltage across all three phases while the motor is under load.

Understanding the Issue

Natural frequency vibratory equipment requires full voltage and sufficient starting torque to accelerate to its designed operating speed. If startup conditions are not met, the conveyor may fail to start, trip electrical protection devices, or fail to remain in operation.

Shipping Braces

New equipment is shipped with braces installed in the unused reaction spring locations to prevent movement during transportation. All shipping braces must be removed before startup. If startup was attempted with the braces installed, verify the eccentric shaft timing before returning the equipment to service.

See owner’s manual or contact ACTION for more information on shaft timing.

Starting Requirements

Natural frequency vibratory equipment experiences its highest electrical load during startup. Once the machine reaches operating speed, the electrical load decreases significantly. The electrical supply must provide full rated voltage and starting current during the first few revolutions.

Motor soft starters are not recommended because they reduce available starting torque and may prevent the equipment from reaching operating speed.

ACTION equipment is designed with Toshiba NEMA B motors, which provide higher pull-up torque than many standard NEMA B motors. If a replacement motor is required, consult ACTION before substituting another manufacturer to ensure adequate starting performance.

Interference

The pan and balancer must move freely throughout the operating cycle. Contact with surrounding structures or other equipment can prevent the conveyor from starting or running properly. Verify all clearances meet the specifications provided in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.

Shaft Timing

Shock loads or restarting the conveyor before it has come to a complete stop can cause the eccentric shaft timing to slip. Incorrect shaft timing increases the torque required to start the conveyor, resulting in higher motor current, nuisance electrical trips, or elevated operating amperage.

Verify the shaft timing and reset it if necessary. Instructions are provided in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
